Sesé, IVECO and the Government of Aragon are launching the first project for autonomous heavy vehicles in in southern Europe

/ IVECO will carry out the technological development of two heavy vehicles with level 4 autonomous driving assistance systems, to be operated on routes managed by Sesé in real traffic conditions, between Zaragoza and Madrid in 2028

/ The initiative will save fuel, improve road safety and optimise supply chain efficiency

/ This milestone reinforces Sesé and IVECO’s role as pioneers in innovation, safety and sustainability in long-haul transport and the supply chain

Zaragoza, 02.12.2025. Sesé, IVECO and the Government of Aragon signed a collaboration agreement today to set up the first pilot project for autonomous trucks in real traffic conditions in southern Europe. The objective is to have two level 4 autonomous heavy vehicles – autonomous driving with on-board driver supervision – in optimal operating conditions on motorways between Zaragoza and Madrid by 2028.

In this way, Aragon becomes a pioneering region in driving innovation in the logistics sector, helping to develop fuel-efficient technology and thus the environmental impact of each journey, increasing road safety, improving driver comfort and optimising the costs of the entire supply chain.

This agreement transforms Aragon into a pioneering region in logistics innovation, positions IVECO as a key player in the development of autonomous driving applied to heavy goods transport and reinforces Sesé’s leadership in the transformation of the future supply chain.

Commitment to safety and sustainability

To reach this milestone, a testing schedule is planned between 2026 and 2027 focusing on system calibration, safety and technological validation. Subsequently, during the second half of 2028, vehicles will gradually be able to carry out the Zaragoza-Madrid route under expert technical supervision.

This development aims to reduce fuel consumption, contributing to more efficient and sustainable transport; to increase road safety thanks to advanced autonomous driving systems and to streamline supply chain costs, offering new efficiency opportunities for companies in the sector.

IVECO, European benchmark in innovation

IVECO has been researching and developing autonomous and connected driving solutions for years, with pioneering platooning and testing projects in different countries. This new pilot is a further step in the company’s strategy to position Spain as a leader in the development of technologies that will shape the future of transport.

Jaime Sanchez, Director of Innovation Strategy and Governance at Iveco Group, stated that “This project is another example of the development initiated by Iveco Group years ago with its first Platooning projects, and which we continue to this day with trials in Central Europe and the future we envision for our customers over the next decade. This test shows the great importance of developing new transport technologies in a country like Spain, whose peripheral position is both an advantage and a challenge for the profitability of our customers”.

Sesé moves towards end-to-end supply chain automation

By supporting the development of this new technology, Sesé seeks to continue with its strategy of digitisation and integral automation of the supply chain, developing new solutions that increase the global competitiveness of operations while improving driver safety and providing greater added value to its customers.

“As the global supply chain undergoes a transformation, the priority is to achieve greater efficiency in all operations while at the same time increasing environmental sustainability. Innovation and the development of new technologies, such as autonomous driving within an overall supply chain automation ecosystem, is the only way to achieve these two goals at the same time and to offer the best possible service to our customers”, said Héctor Cebrián, head of sustainability and institutional relations at Sesé.

Aragon, European logistics hub

For their part, representatives of the Government of Aragon have highlighted the importance of this agreement for strengthening Aragon’s position as a European logistics hub and for continuing to make progress in the transition towards more innovative and sustainable transport.

Jorge Azcón, President of the Government of Aragon, has assured that  “This is a revolutionary initiative for three sectors—logistics, automotive, and technology—which are already key in Aragon and whose importance will continue to grow in the coming years ”. “Without a doubt, this collaboration is an opportunity to strengthen competitiveness and technological autonomy in Aragon, generating added value in our economy and creating skilled jobs. The Government of Aragon is involved in this initiative because it undeniably positions us as an innovative leader in technological development and sustainability in the logistics and industrial fields.”
